Sports and Socialization

In class on September 18, 2012, we discussed the importance of socialization in sports. Parents, older siblings and role models have a big impact on how a child will grow up. Socialization is a process of learning and social development that occurs as we interact with one another and become familiar with the social world in which we live in. In the video, it shows that everything the child sees the adult or parent do, the child wants to imitate or copy what the adult just did. As stated in the article, the primary agent of socialization and the first “educator”, is the family, a family plays an essential role in the transmission of the fundamental values that encourage and nurture learning in a young child. I agree with the article, that there are individuals that follow in their parents footsteps. A player like Kobe Bryant would be a good example. Kobe had the luxury of seeing his father play professional basketball while growing up as a child., which most likely influenced Kobe to become a professional basketball player, at a young age.

According to Coakley's text on page 94, explains how the model of socialization found that there are three key factors in to why individuals participate in sports. People become likely to play sports depending on the influence of parents, siblings, teachers, peers and role models. Another reason why people participate in sports is the availability of opportunity to play sports, in a way that's personally satisfying. Lastly the individuals abilities, characteristics and resources to play the sport. Ingham (1999), in Coakley's text, page 97 expresses that we should take into account individuals perception of how participating in a sport, is related to there growth and development, and to which how the participation is reasoned in their culture.

Problems in Youth Sport

Problems in Youth Sport
The Parents or Children?
By Blaze Foster

In class on September 25th, we discussed the problems in youth sport today. According to this article, in most incidents, the parents are who to blame for the problems at youth sporting events. The first Youth Sports National Report Card, prepared by a group called Citizenship,  through Sports Alliance, issued low grades for parents' behavior and a win-at-all-cost mentality fostered by the grown-ups who oversee kids' sports (Emmon 2012). This article briefly talks about the poor role modeling some of the parents are showing to there kids. For example, parents these days are placing too much emphasis on winning and setting bad examples with their own poor sportsmanship rather than promoting their child to just have fun. Also parents our willing to shell out thousands of dollars so their kids can compete year-round and receive the best training. Which is evident to what  we learned in class, that youth sports organized programs are becoming increasingly popular, and emphasising more on performance.
According to Coakley (page 132), he explains that what causes some of the poor behavior from the parents, comes from the ego of if your child is successful in sports, that other parents, perceive the parents with a successful athlete to be parenting the correct way. As we learned in class, 70 % of children dropout of sports by the age of 13. I feel parents are a big part of why children choose to dropout of sports. Jim Thompson, the Executive of Positive Coaching Alliance stated"There are coaches and parents all across the country who are doing great things in youth sports,'' Thompson said. "But that's not the trend? Do you believe Jim Thompson?

NBA All Star Game

Yesterday night i watched the NBA All star game, which consist of the best players from the eastern and western conferences. The All -Star game this year seemed to be more intense than other years past. I loved how Kobe Bryant and Lebron James put on a good show for the fans during the game. Even though the All Star game doesn't mean anything, it was nice for the players to play hard, and put on a great show for the fans. But should the NBA All Star game count for something? For example, the winning conference earning home court advantage in the playoffs, or should the game continue to have no meaning and just be for fun?

Carmelo Anthony Trade

I believe the Carmelo Athony trade is getting ridiculous. Before the NBA season started, the media was talking about how Carmelo wants out of Denver and its still yet to happen. But the past few days, trade talks have started to escalate between the Lakers and the New York Knicks trying to get the star forward Carmelo Anthony. I honestly dont think that either team will be able to get the trade done before the trade deadline (February 24th). How do you guys feel about this?
